How armor trims work

Armor trims are cosmetic patterns you add to armor at a smithing table. They do not change protection or durability; they only change how the armor looks. Every piece can carry a different pattern and colour, which gives thousands of possible outfits.

  1. Find a template. Each trim pattern is a smithing template hidden in a specific structure, from desert pyramids to ancient cities.
  2. Pick a material. The material sets the trim colour: amethyst, copper, diamond, emerald, gold, iron, lapis, netherite, quartz, redstone or resin.
  3. Smith it. Put the template, the armor piece and the material into a smithing table. The template is used up, so duplicate it first if you want more.

Trim materials

Eleven items can colour a trim. Five of them (copper, diamond, gold, iron and netherite) have a darker variant that appears automatically on armor of the same material, so the pattern does not blend into the armor.

Armor you can trim

Leather, Chainmail, Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond, Netherite helmets, chestplates, leggings and boots all accept trims. Leather can also be dyed, and the dye sits underneath the trim, so you can pick any colour combination. Copper armor arrived in the 2025 Copper Age drop and takes trims like every other set.

Duplicating templates

Templates are consumed when used, but you can copy them at a crafting table: seven diamonds, the template and one block tied to where it was found. The recipe gives back two templates, so one lucky find can cover a whole set.
